Since the release of Need For Speed: Undercover, Black Box has been working on a new title to continue the action focused street-racing gameplay of their previous games. This title has an extended development window to give the developers a chance to create a game with more quality than the previous ones, which only had 1 year of development. According to EA Games, Black Box has been working on The Run for the past 2 years until E3 2011. The announced release date is set to November 15th, so the game will have a development time of about 2 years and 6 months. Need For Speed: The Run will use DICE's Frostbite Engine 2.0, which is the same game engine used in the first-person-shooter Battlefield 3.
Need For Speed: The Run will feature a fictional storyline and characters. The basis of the game is an "illicit, high stakes racing" from San Francisco to New York, with stops through many other locations in the USA. The cops will play an important role, as they will pursue the player during The Run. At E3 2011 EA revealed some gameplay footage of the game, showing part of a race intercalated with action scenes where the player has some control via Quick Time Events (QTE). The video shows a man racing a Ford Shelby GT500 against a yellow Porsche 911 GT2 (993). After a crash, the player is seen running away from the police through rooftops until he grabs another car, at this time, a police car. The chase continues but eventually the helicopter damages the car enough, so it crashes on the train tracks. The player can be seen escaping in the last second before the train hits.
The game will ship in two editions, the normal one and a Limited Edition, which comes with 5 additional events and 3 exclusive cars: the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, the Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 and the Porsche 911 Carrera S. More cars and events are available if you pre-order this version of the game. See "Pre-order Packs" below for more info.
A time-limited demo is set to be released on the 18th of October on Xbox LIVE Marketplace (for Xbox 360 players) and a PlayStation 3 demo is set to be released on the 19th of October on PlayStation Network. The demo will be available until the 1st of November. The demo features a race in the Desert Hills of Nevada where a player has the chance to drive the Lamborghini Gallardo LP 560-4 Valentino Balboni. After that, the player will face a treacherous shortcut in Independence Pass. If the player can refer a friend, he/she will unlock the 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S. No PC demo was announced.
